It’s a beautiful morning in Novato, California. The sun is shining, and you stroll out to admire your yard with coffee in hand, only to find unsightly trails of destruction crisscrossing your lawn.
Sound familiar? If so, you might be dealing with vole damage to lawns, a surprisingly common issue in the Bay Area. These tiny critters can wreak havoc on your yard, but don’t worry—we’ve got you covered.
Here’s what you need to know, and more importantly, what you need to do, to overcome the problem.
What Are Voles and Why Are They a Problem?
Voles, often called meadow or field mice, are small rodents notorious for their appetite for grass, roots, and bulbs.
Unlike house mice, they rarely invade homes but can cause significant problems outdoors. Their shallow tunnels and surface runways damage lawns and gardens, leaving behind scattered mounds and weakened root systems.
Voles reproduce quickly, meaning you need to address infestations early. Left unchecked, these pests can turn your beautiful green lawn into a patchwork of bare spots and brittle roots.
For homeowners in areas like Ignacio or Hamilton in Novato, preventing vole damage to lawns is especially important to maintain property value and curb appeal.
How to Prevent and Manage Vole Issues
There’s good news: with simple maintenance and effective strategies, you can prevent voles from damaging your yard. Here’s how:
1. Maintain a Clean and Tidy Yard
Voles thrive in dense vegetation and cluttered yards, where they can hide from predators. Removing potential hiding spots is the number one key to discouraging them.
- Trim bushes and hedges regularly. Keep branches and leaves from reaching the soil.
- Dispose of yard waste quickly. Piles of clippings, leaves, or mulch can offer voles a cozy home.
- Mow your lawn frequently. Short grass exposes voles to predators and keeps them on edge.
By keeping your yard tidy, you make it far less inviting for these uninvited guests.
2. Use Physical Barriers
Sometimes, the best offense is a good defense. Barriers can prevent voles from accessing specific areas of your yard.
- Lay hardware cloth (wire mesh) around vulnerable plants, gardens, or trees to protect the root systems. Ensure the mesh goes at least 6 inches underground.
- Install perimeter fencing if you’re protecting a large garden space.
- Use garden netting to prevent voles from digging into bulbs.
These inexpensive solutions act as a simple way to protect high-risk areas.
3. Implement Natural Deterrents
Another layer of protection is using deterrents to make your property less attractive to voles.
- Plant vole-repelling vegetation like garlic, daffodils, or castor beans.
- Apply organic repellents that use essential oils (like peppermint or castor oil). These make the yard unappealing for voles while ensuring safety for pets and kids.
- Encourage natural predators, such as owls, hawks, or snakes, by creating predator-friendly environments.
Using natural solutions will help you protect both your lawn’s health and facilitate harmony with the environment.

Did You Know?
Voles play a critical role in the food chain, serving as a primary food source for predators like owls, hawks, and coyotes. But did you know their life expectancy is shockingly short? Most voles live only a couple of months in the wild. Their quick reproduction rate, however, makes them a lasting challenge for homeowners.
FAQ
What is causing the tracks on my lawn?
If you notice surface tracks or trails in your lawn, it’s likely vole damage to lawns. Voles create small, visible runways as they feed on grass and roots.
How can I tell if I have voles or moles?
Moles dig deeper tunnels, creating visible mounds, while voles dig shallow trails across the surface, and they often chew on plant stems and roots.
Is vole damage seasonal?
Vole damage tends to be more visible in early spring when snow or dense vegetation recedes, exposing the trails. However, voles are active year-round.
Can I fix lawn damage caused by voles?
Absolutely. Once the voles are gone, reseed or patch the damaged areas of your lawn, and implement the preventive measures listed above.
